Gentle and Effective Dental Appointments
Book An AppointmentWhat to Do for Common Dental Emergencies
Here is some immediate guidance on how to handle the most common childhood dental emergencies before and on your way to our office.
Toothache
How you can help:
- First, have your child rinse their mouth with warm water.
- Gently use dental floss to ensure there is no food or debris caught between the teeth.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
- Do not apply heat or aspirin directly to the sore tooth or gums.
- Call our office for an appointment.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Time is critical in saving a knocked-out tooth. Please contact us immediately.
How you can help:
- Recover the tooth, holding it only by the crown (the chewing part), not the root.
- Gently rinse the tooth with water only. Do not scrub it or use soap.
- If possible, gently reinsert the tooth into the socket and have your child hold it in place by biting on gauze.
- If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a small container of milk or your child’s saliva.
- The tooth must stay moist at all times. Do not let it dry out.
- Come to our office or the nearest emergency room immediately.
Chipped or Fractured Tooth
How you can help:
- Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to clean the area.
- Apply a cold compress to the face to minimize swelling.
- If you can find the broken tooth fragment, bring it with you.
- Contact our office immediately.
Tooth Pushed Out of Place
An injury can push a tooth forward, backward, or sideways. It is important not to force the tooth back into place.
How you can help:
- Place a cold, moist compress on the affected area to help with discomfort.
- You may offer children’s Tylenol for pain.
- Contact our office immediately for an appointment.
